Six of Australia’s leading charity retailers are collaborating under Charitable Recycling Australia to launch a new Charity Shop? Pop-Up Concept at Westfield Fountain Gate.
Charity Shop? will trade for five weeks from 1 May 2023 to demonstrate what can be achieved by charity retailing done different, in appealing to mainstream consumers who may never have shopped second-hand charity before and accentuating environmental impact.
Designed for socially and environmentally conscious Millennials and Gen Z, the shop has an environmental target to save 47,000 tonnes of Carbon Emissions through the reuse of clothing during the five weeks.
It will be stocked with 4,100 items of pre-loved fashion from Salvos, Vinnies, Red Cross, Uniting, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Uniting and Save the Children, plus brand new pre-consumer clothing from ThreeByOne denim and Jaggad high performance activewear.
The net proceeds of the shop’s trading will go towards the charitable reuse sector’s environmental and social causes, contributing to both climate change impact and the transition to the Circular Economy. Charitable Recycling Australia members also raise funds through their charity shops for the most disadvantaged in our communities, including food and shelter for those in need, crisis support, mental health and a wide range of disability and illness support.
Kepler Analytics is providing their customer insights software on a probono basis, re-Up is providing their upcycled bags free of charge, Shop for Shops is fitting out the shop for free and Westfield is providing generous PR support, photography, volunteers, stylists, activations and smart screen time at the centre to promote the shop. Be Collective is also providing help with our volunteers.
This is an Australian-first innovation, with charity retail done differently, collectively and collaboratively to showcase the environmental credentials of charity retail with a stylish and engaging customer experience, so shoppers can feel good by doing good – and finding unique and sustainable fashion treasures without costing the earth.
